Tryst

KATYA HARRIS

Oh my god, there was something crawling up my leg.

Alarm skittered up my spine. My mind conjured up an image of a fat, hairy spider with bristly legs making its way up the outside of my knee. My breaths shallowed as panic tickled me beneath my breastbone. Every muscle in my body went rigid. This was why I hated outdoor events—it didn’t matter how beautiful the setting was, how romantic, there was too much risk of being violated by some kind of creepy-crawly.

Another little tickle, just above my knee. My breath caught. I don’t know why, but the thought of it reaching the hem of my dress was abhorrent.

Reaching under the table, trying not to freak out and make a scene, I aimed a slapping brush at the interloper. I almost leapt to my feet when I encountered something a lot bigger than a spider.

Swinging my head round, I glared at the face smiling back at me. “Trina,” I hissed under my breath.

My girlfriend’s smile became a full-blown grin. Now that she’d been discovered, her hand settled more firmly on my leg. “What?” she whispered back, her thumb starting to move in little circles on my knee.

Her innocent expression didn’t fool me for an instant. Frowning, I wrapped my fingers around her wrist and tried to tug it away, but her hand refused to be dislodged. “You know what. I thought you were a bug.”

“That’s not very flattering,” she teased with a pout. She had painted her lips a juicy shade of coral pink and they glistened in the romantic lighting like ripe fruit.

Leaning over to whisper in my ear, Trina said, “I’m just livening things up a bit. The groom made a mistake in picking this guy as his best man. I think all the guests will be asleep by the time he’s finished his speech.”

Josh—a distant cousin of mine, just like the groom—really was an awful public speaker. Discreetly looking around, I saw more than one pair of eyes glazed over with boredom. “Maybe that’s the plan,” I whispered back. “That way they could save a lot of money on the champagne.”

Trina tittered. “As if. I think most of these people bathe in the stuff.” She wrinkled her nose. “Some of them certainly smell like it.”

“Being a Dupree comes with a high risk of alcoholism. If I had to be around these people on a regular basis, I’d turn to drink as well,” I murmured, semi-seriously. “Anyway, Josh being his usual dull self is no excuse for you to feel me up under the table.”

“Why not?” Trina fired back with a familiar cheeky smile. “Personally, I think there’s no better time.” Her hand slid a little higher up my leg, pushing underneath the hem of my dress.

My breath hitched. I was wearing stockings and Trina’s fingers were flirting with the edges of their lacy tops.

“Trina,” I warned.

She blinked at me. “What?” The twitching of her lips gave her away.

I rolled my eyes. “I never should have brought you here.
